What is GST ?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a form of indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services. In India, it's a multistage, destination based tax, as all parties get the refund except the final consumer of a product. There are five major GST slabs - 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Few products such as petroleum based, alcoholic beverages etc are not taxed under GST as they're taxed by each state governments separately as per previous tax rules. GST came into effect from July 2017 and it has replaced many existing tax systems such as VAT, Service Tax, Excise Tax, Luxury Tax etc.
